ENVIRONMENTAL
MASS
SPECTROMETRY

welcome

Our vision

Our vision is to integrate innovative environmental analytical and green technology research with the traditional educational activities of Chemistry School, and to create a valuable knowledge center for environmental chemistry and mass spectrometry through the team efforts of students and researchers, and through collaboration with other research laboratories.

on the spotlight

HRMS

Cutting edge
High resolution mass spectrometry with environmental analysis applications, target, suspect and non target analysis, elucidation of transformation products (TPs)

AOPs

Advanced oxidation processes (for the remediation of organic contaminants in urban waters, waste waters and leachates

Microplastics

Small plastics, big problems
Identification and quantification of microplastics in several environmental substrates, including aqueous and solid samples (e.g. seawater, WWTP effluents, sand, sediments, etc.)

Qa/qc

Striving for excellence
Validation and Quality assurance/Quality control (QA/QC) services, meeting the requirements of laboratory accreditation schemes based on ISO 17025:2017

EXPOSOMe

Connecting the dots
Determination of chemicals and their metabolites in biological samples (e.g. blood, urine) for the evaluation of human exposure

novel materials

New materials adapted to extraction techniques for efficient and green approaches (molecular imprinted polymers, super absorbent polymers, hydrogels, bio-based polymeric materials, fabric-coated, magnetic nanomaterials etc.)

toxicity assesSment

Evaluation of ecotoxicity of known ECs and their mixtures employing not only in vitro methodologies but also in silico tools

food analysis and authenticity

Food for thought
Compact workflows for food authenticity assessment, based on the HRMS analysis of the molecular “fingerprint” of foods using HRMS Orbitrap techniques

big data analytics

Big data, bigger solutions
Data science and environmental cheminformatics in combination with computational methods employed for investigating and elucidating unknown contaminants using HRMS

wastewater- based EPIDEMIOLOGY

Following the trends
WBE is the normalisation of analyte influent concentration to per capita mass loads provides population‐scale information on human activity within catchment boundaries

ECs: FATE & TRANSPORTATION

Monitoring the occurrence of emerging contaminants, such PPCPs, PFAS and EDCs at trace levels in aquatic environments that represent a major threat to water resources due to their potential risks to the ecosystem and humans

ArcGIS APPLICATIONS

The world is your oyster
Implementing geodata and spatial data analysis to provide a holistic approach for monitoring data presentation combined with citizen science tools
